Redford, Fonda shoot movie scene at Colorado Springs hospital | News

Robert Redford and Jane Fonda were spotted at Memorial Hospital Central on Wednesday.

No, they weren’t in dire need of medical care – they were filming a scene for the Netflix movie “Our Souls at Night.”

“In health care we experience so many intense moments, so having the film crew on site was fun and uplifting for staff,” Cherie Gorby, UCHealth Memorial Hospital’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “I’m sure we will be talking about this experience for a long time to come.”

A location scout contacted the hospital about filming in July, prompting hospital spokeswoman Cary Vogrin and Gorby to pick up a copy of Kent Haruf’s 2015 Colorado-based novel about two widowers who develop a friendship that ignites into passion.

“My first thought was I need to read the book to see if it’s appropriate for the hospital,” Vogrin said. “I also wanted to be sure any filming done wouldn’t have any impact on patient care or operations.”

Filming took place in the hospital’s medical simulation center, an area now used only for training. The wing served as the hospital’s labor and delivery unit until 2007. Memorial also provided hospital equipment and the expertise of a registered nurse, who worked with one of the stars to ensure authenticity.

“The simulation center was perfect,” Vogrin said. “Aside from the equipment and lights outside the hospital, most people wouldn’t know a movie was filming there.”

Inside was a different story. Crews spent Saturday and Tuesday setting up for the one-day scene that began filming about noon Wednesday. Redford and Fonda were on set along with about 70 extras who portrayed hospital visitors, patients, doctors and nurses. The hospital didn’t allow crew vehicles to park on-site; they had to use shuttles.

“The crew was very friendly and personable,” Vogrin said. “We enjoyed having them here, and we’re excited to see Memorial featured in the movie.”

An undisclosed fee the hospital received for filming will be gifted to the Memorial Hospital Foundation to benefit oncology patients.

Scenes for the movie have been filmed in Colorado Springs, Cañon City, Florence and Denver since September. The film is set for release next year on the online streaming media and video service.
