Cape products find a new market

Wesgro has announced that Reliance Retail, India’s largest retailer, has begun stocking an array of products proudly made in the Western Cape, reports Cape {town} Etc.

This exciting development marks the first instance of South African goods hitting the shelves in select Reliance Freshpik and GoFresh stores in Mumbai, paving the way for broader opportunities in one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets.

The carefully curated selection includes rooibos teas, dried fruits, artisanal spices, and gourmet sauces and dressings, showcasing the region’s commitment to sustainability and quality.

This initiative not only amplifies the visibility of Western Cape products but also introduces Indian consumers to the unique flavours and stories of South Africa.

At the official launch event, notable figures including the CEO of Reliance Retail, Damodar Mall, South African Consul General in Mumbai, Mr. Gideon Labane, and cricket legend Herschelle Gibbs emphasised the significance of trade and cultural exchange in establishing relationships with new markets.

This collaboration stems from Reliance Retail’s involvement in Wesgro’s Made in the Cape Buyers’ Programme earlier this year, which aimed to connect Indian retailers with Western Cape exporters.

In his comments, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, hailed the partnership as a milestone in expanding the province’s trade footprint.
