IndiGo to Launch 1st Direct Flights from India to Greece in 2026

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by passengers carried and fleet size, announced plans to launch six weekly direct flights to Athens scheduled to start January 2026. The new route will follow the delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR by the end of this year, pending regulatory approval.

Based in Gurgaon, IndiGo currently holds a 64.1% share of India’s domestic aviation market. The airlines is initially aiming to link Athens with Delhi and Mumbai, with future plans to expand to additional Greek destinations.

The move comes amid rising interest from Indian travelers in visiting Greece. According to the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), India recently overtook China as the leading long-haul market driving demand for Greek destinations. Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias has also underscored India’s growing role as a key tourism market for Greece.

On Monday, IndiGo and Greece’s national carrier AEGEAN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to operate codeshare flights, aiming to enhance connectivity and ensure a seamless travel experience.

Calling the new Athens route a “symbolic milestone in the rise of Indian aviation,” IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said the launch underscores the airline’s international expansion strategy. “IndiGo is proud to be the only Indian airline to announce direct flights between India and Greece – two ancient civilizations with long-standing ties now strengthened through modern economic and cultural exchange.”

He added that the new air corridor would boost both leisure and business travel, while laying the groundwork for wider connectivity between the two countries.
