Vin Diesel’s Fantasy Action Film Finds a New Streaming Home Amid Sequel Announcement
One of Vin Diesel’s most underrated action hits is getting a new streaming home ahead of the long-overdue sequel. That is, before Fast & Furious 11 happens.
Vin Diesel is set to take Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ by storm yet again as The Last Witch Hunter prepares to make the leap to the platform. The Last Witch Hunter is expected to arrive on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ (in select regions) on Oct. 1. The fantasy action film is set to debut alongside dozens of other genre favorites, such as the Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes and the first seven films in the Saw series.
Directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless, The Last Witch Hunter stars Diesel as Kaulder, an ancient knight who struck down the fabled Witch Queen over 800 years before the events of the film and was cursed with immortality for his trouble. The film follows Kaulder in the modern day as he works in secret for the Axe and Cross, an clandestine organization tasked with keeping the peace between humankind and witches by any means necessary.
The core cast of The Last Witch Hunter also includes Michael Caine as Kaulder’s former aide, the 36th Dolan, Elijah Wood as the successor to Caine’s character, the 37th Dolan, Rose Leslie as a witch named Chloe, Julie Engelbrecht as the Witch Queen, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Baltasar Ketola, better known as Belial.
The Last Witch Hunter arrived in theaters in 2015 to some exceptionally harsh reviews from critics, many of whom called out the film’s plodding pacing, overtly grim tone, and lack of any real charm apart from Diesel’s performance. As of the time of writing, The Last Witch Hunter holds a mere 18% “rotten” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across 137 verified critical reviews. The Last Witch Hunter also holds a surprisingly low audience score of only 44% via Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter,” despite having made nearly $147 million at the box office during its original theatrical run, against a budget between $71 million and $90 million.

Considering its high budget, the fantasy action film was not a profitable affair for Lionsgate, which distributed the film. However, that didn’t stop them from pursuing The Last Witch Hunter further, despite the poor reviews and bombing in theaters.
While Diesel himself has been open about his desire to return to the world of The Last Witch Hunter in the past decade, a follow-up feature is only just getting underway. In early September, Lionsgate confirmed the development of a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter in concert with Diesel’s One Race Films. Although no official deals have been struck yet, it was reported that both Diesel and Michael Caine were on board to reprise their roles from the original film. The move comes as part of Lionsgate’s efforts to expand upon properties that will overperform in ancillary markets and can be easily built upon with further sequels and tie-in releases.
The Last Witch Hunter will be available for streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in select regions beginning Oct. 1.
