The event saw 25 male and female athletes, 40 builders and 20 teams recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and the recognition they brought to our city. A book has been developed outlining the accomplishments of all of those who were recognized.
It was a day to highlight the achievements of those being recognized and of renewed acquaintances and friendships as athletes, their coaches and those who worked behind the scenes shared stories and laughter about times so long ago.
Nineteen Olympians were honoured along with numerous other athletes who achieved prominence on the world stage and at a national level.
A spokesperson for each of the four groups all hit on the same theme. Kate Pace-Lindsay, Nancy Olmsted and Dave Rees all referenced how important North Bay had been to their development and the support they received along their journey. Tom Cook, speaking on behalf of the builders referenced the contribution of the many volunteers that, through their efforts, these tremendous athletes were able to get their start.
All told, the event honoured 19 Olympians, numerous athletes who secured gold at national and world championship levels as well as athletes who went to professional careers. At the same time recognizing the builders who were the behind the scenes people, who their efforts, gave North Bay athletes a starting point for their careers.
A highlight of the event was the announcement of the re-naming of the Canadore College bursary giving annually by the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame. Marg Stephen who has made a significant donation to the Hall and as a former educator, will now have her name associated with the bursary which will now be now known as the Marg Stephen Bursary.
Summing up the day, comments referred to the pride that those who were in attendance felt that their city stilled remembered them and from those who were representing honourees who are no longer with us, how pleased they were to represent their family member.
The two event organizers, Dave Saad and Larry Tougas, both stated after the event “it was a lot of work locating the recipients and putting the logistics in place, but seeing how pleased everyone was that the event happened, made it all worthwhile.”
