Shuswap Film Society: The Mountain a heartwarming, coming-of-age tale
Nestled beneath the watchful gaze of Mount Taranaki in New Zealand, a trio of unlikely friends embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the heartwarming coming-of-age tale, The Mountain.
Sam, a young girl grappling with both her Maori heritage and cancer diagnosis, finds solace in the company of the adventurous Maori boy Bronco, and the more cautious Mallory. Their escape into the wilderness becomes a quest for belonging, connection, and a deeper understanding of their place in the world.
Visually, The Mountain stuns. Cinematographer Matt Henley captures the breathtaking beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes, with sweeping vistas that inspire awe. The score, a blend of traditional Maori instruments and contemporary sounds, seamlessly complements the visuals, creating a sense of both serenity and adventure.
Rachel House, making her feature directorial debut, has crafted a distinctly New Zealand film that is best enjoyed with an open heart and a sense of wonder, perfect for a family movie night or a solo escape into the beauty of the natural world.
A delightful, magical and melancholy film brimming with humour and tenderness, The Mountain (Te Maunga) plays at the Salmar Grand Theatre on Saturday, September 27 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $8 (cash only).
