Idukki hills come alive with songs from ‘Cassette’ music club | Kerala Stories

Thodupuzha: Cassette, the music club at the Government Engineering College in Idukki, has become quite a sensation, not only within the campus but also on social media.

The soothing melodies and the thrilling fast numbers presented by the club members are like a treat to the ears. The teachers are extremely supportive and encouraging as well. Interestingly, both senior and junior students at the college are members of this music club.

Devapriya Prem, a third-year student and college chairperson, deserves credit for coordinating the club and training its members. Anyone who wishes to sing can join the club.

Two weeks ago, the students sang the popular folk song Kanta Njanum Varam and posted the video on Instagram. This reel has already garnered 1.5 million views, with netizens commenting, “They should have gone to a music college and not an engineering college.” Meanwhile, the video of Entaro Mahanu Bhavulu from Devadoothan also crossed 1.4 million views.

Music never ends
“Music never ends; neither do struggles,” reads a board in front of the tree named Guillotine near the college gate. The students are embracing music as a way to escape the monotony of studies. They say they sing to relieve stress when they get too busy with labs and classes.

The club members often gather under the trees inside the campus, singing songs and celebrating the spirit of music. Second-year students Aditya N Mohan, A S Rajul, Jerone Johnson, M J Giridhar, Keerthana Santhosh and Arya Radhakrishnan, as well as fourth-year students Aneesia Joseph, N S Sreelakshmi, Aiswarya Joy, M A Ashiq Rahman, M G Monu Krishna and P S Praveena, are the lead singers of the club. The club is mentored by I P Keerthana, Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Technology.
