Sikh Grandma Deported To India From US After Living 30 Years In California News24 –

A 73-year-old Sikh woman was deported to India from the United States after being detained by ICE on September 8 on charges of living illegally in Northern California.

She was not allowed to meet any of her family members or her attorney. The woman, Bibi Harjit Kaur, had exhausted all her appeals to stay in the United States. Kaur’s attorney, Deepak Ahluwalia, posted a video on Instagram and said that her family was ready to cooperate with ICE and willing to send her back to India, but she was detained by the officials.

The attorney claimed that Kaur had been in touch with ICE for her travel documents for the last 13 years, but the department did not provide them. On the contrary, ICE claimed that the woman wanted to stay in the United States.

Deepak Ahluwalia said that neither Kaur’s family members nor he were informed by ICE that she was being transported from a California detention centre to Georgia in handcuffs. She was deported on a chartered flight to India.

He further said that she was not given a bed for the last 48 hours in the United States. She was given a cheese sandwich on the flight, but when she asked for her dentures, the officials told her it was her problem.

The Sikh group protested Kaur’s detention, terming it a violation of basic standards.
