Teammates gather to celebrate movie anniversary
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (7News) — Twenty-five years ago, a movie about a Northern Virginia high school football team was released. Sure, there was plenty of X’s and O’s, but it was so much more.
“It wasn’t just a movie about football, it was a movie about relationships,” said Wayne A. Sanders, a member of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team that won a state championship.
The school now named Alexandria City High School was the site where some of the remaining members of the team, coaching staff and cheerleaders gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the movie’s release.
In 1971, the school system formally desegregated, which combined two schools and student bodies into one area school which was T.C. Williams in Alexandria.
“Of course there was tension in the beginning. It’s obvious, you move people from one school to another school, things happen. So, there were problems,” said James Barber, a center from the 1971 team.
“The team used to walk the halls just to make sure nothing would happen. But everyone got galvanized about that, and it’s been history ever since, it’s been great,” Barber added.
The story gained steam and eventually became the “Remember the Titans” film, starting Academy Award winner actor Denzel Washington with a cast featuring Donald Faison, Ryan Gosling, Wood Harris and Hayden Panettiere.
