‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ trailer drops: Release date, more
“Avatar” is back and more suspenseful than ever.
In a new trailer, out Thursday, Sept. 25, fans got a sneak preview of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third film in director James Cameron’s critically acclaimed series. The nearly 3-minute spot is almost entirely action, as the Sullys, the family central to Cameron’s series, engage in battle on Pandora, a planet ruled by different natural laws than Earth.
The film, which hits theaters Dec. 26, follows 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which nabbed an Academy Award for best visual effects, and was nominated for three others. Both movies walk in the footsteps of the original “Avatar” which upended the movie market in 2009, stunning audiences with its special effects and breaking box office records.
The new movie promises fresh conflict as the Sully family, headed up by Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), faces off against a new tribe. The conflict plays out against the backdrop of stunning visuals, leaning into the film’s name as the characters battle in icy blue oceans and attempt to escape fiery explosions.
The movie will have big shoes to fill.
“Avatar” remains the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.9 billion worldwide, trailed by “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.8 billion) and “The Way of Water” ($2.3 billion) at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. “Fire and Ash” is the third of five planned “Avatar” movies, with new sequels expected in 2029 and 2031.
The film arrives less than a year after Saldaña won her first Oscar, taking best supporting actress for the controversial musical “Emilia Pérez,” about a Mexican cartel lord (Karla Sofía Gascón) who transitions.
