NUS launches new music doctorate programme

SINGAPORE – Performers, composers and musicians who want to further their education now have a new avenue to do so, with the National University of Singapore introducing a new doctorate programme.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Music Practices programme, offered by the university’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST), is a four- or five-year programme that integrates both artistic practice and scholarly research, NUS said in a release on Sept 26.

The programme differs from most international music doctoral programmes, which typically emphasise either research or practice, according to the university.

Students pursuing the degree will be able to read courses and work on projects involving other fields of study, such as computer science, public health, law, business and the social sciences.

YST dean Peter Tornquist said: “In this programme, artistic practice is not just a component of research – it stands alongside and in dialogue with it.

“This opens up new opportunities for students to create and reflect on their work through both thinking and doing, contributing to new knowledge and artistic output in integrated and interdisciplinary ways.”

Examples of possible student projects include experimenting with and exploring the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in music composition, and investigating the preservation of musical traditions while creating new works inspired by them, Professor Tornquist said.

Students in this new programme will undertake a qualifying examination, comprehensive coursework and a doctoral thesis. Additionally, they will be asked to present an artistic piece of work linked with their research.

Those who graduate from the programme will be primed for roles in academia, arts education, cultural policy and arts management, NUS said.

The programme is open for applications for the January 2026 intake from Sept 26 to Oct 31, and those interested can find out more at
