‘I just want my life back’: Govt bank employee in India quits job after 15 years of service – Trending News
A public sector bank employee with over 15 years of service shared his decision to stop reporting to work, citing severe health issues, intense workplace pressure and the erosion of his personal peace. In an anonymous post on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace forum, the 39-year-old banker said he could no longer continue in what many perceive as a “safe and prestigious” government job. “I feel suffocated in my government bank job. I don’t think I can do it anymore,” the Redditor wrote along with a photo of his office.
Having cleared three rounds of competitive national-level exams to secure his position, the banker described his early career as a dream fulfilled. But over time, that dream turned into a struggle with mounting stress and deteriorating health.
Routinely pressured to sell ‘useless’ products
“A PSU bank job comes with stability, a decent house, a car, a steady salary and a certain respect in society. But what it doesn’t give me anymore…is peace,” the post read. It went on to describe how relentless sales targets, weekend work and frequent relocations to remote areas had taken a toll. Days often stretched from 10 am to 10 pm and employees were routinely pressured to sell products to meet targets.
“I know many jobs are demanding. But this one also asks me to sell useless insurance products to the public, work on Sundays to meet targets, obey the unreasonable whims of bosses, and never raise my voice — not even on social platforms. It’s like signing away your dignity,” the post further stated.
“This job has also given me high BP, thyroid issues, and a fatty liver,” the banker wrote.
‘Hope I get my life back’
In what he admitted was a drastic step, the banker has stopped reporting to work. “Yes, this means my salary will stop. My financial struggles may begin. But I hope — with all my heart — that I’ll get my life back,” he wrote.
The post struck a chord with several users online who commented on work culture in India’s public sector. “We don’t talk enough about the toxic nature of PSU jobs,” one user commented. Another added, “My sister works in a government bank and faces the same pressure. She hardly sees her four-year-old daughter.”
Others noted that work-related stress is not unique to banking, with one IT employee sharing similar struggles with high blood pressure and job insecurity. “We envy your job security, but it’s clear that the grass isn’t always greener,” another comment read.
