New Karate Kid Movie Gets Official Title and Logo Ahead of NYCC

Though Netflix’s Cobra Kai series has managed to keep Karate Kid fans satiated for the most part, it’s been nearly 15 years since we’ve seen a film on the big screen. All that’s going to change next year, though, when the franchise returns to theaters for the sixth entry in the epic martial arts saga that began in 1984, which we now know is called Karate Kid: Legends.

Per the official X account of @KarateKidMovie, the new title and logo were revealed yesterday ahead of New York Comic Con, which kicks off on October 17. The film will be featured heavily at the yearly festival of geekery, with possibly a teaser trailer to look forward to, but that has yet to be confirmed. Check out the big reveal below for Karate Kid: Legends, whose logo kind of reminds us of Sega Genesis fighting games of yesteryear.

Karate Kid: Legends will feature the return of Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso, marking the first time he’s been featured in a theatrical release since 1989’s Karate Kid 3. Jackie Chan is also on board to reprise his role of Mr. Han from the 2010 film, and newcomer Ben Wang will portray the lead of Li Fong. Plot details remain under wraps for now, but the movie is said to focus on Fong as he moves from China to the East Coast of the United States, and connects with Mr. Han to begin training in the martial arts. Joshua Jackson also stars as Victor (who’s presumably the film’s antagonist, which is awesome because he plays a great villain), and Shaunette Renée Wilson portrays Ms. Morgan, perhaps one of Fong’s teachers. Additional cast members include Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Wyatt Oleff, and Jennifer-Lyn Christie.

Where Does Karate Kid: Legends Fit in the Franchise Timeline?

First expected to be released in June of this year, that date was shifted to December thanks to the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023. It changed again when the strikes managed to also affect the release of Cobra Kai, pushing everything to 2025, so the two didn’t conflict with one another. Karate Kid: Legends now has a firm release date of May 30 next year, while the sixth and final season of the Netflix series is already underway, having aired its first five of 15 episodes back in July. Split into three parts, the following five will be released on November 15, with the remainder of the grand finale set to premiere in February according to star Martin Kove, though that has yet to be officially confirmed by Netflix.

Karate Kid Star Reveals Why He is Blown Away by New Franchise Lead

This Karate Kid actor “is so impressed” with the work done by the young performer portraying the film’s lead.

As mentioned, plot details remain a heavily guarded secret for Karate Kid: Legends right now, so we’re not exactly sure how it fits into the overall timeline of the franchise, but its plot is expected to touch on some of what took place between 1994’s The Next Karate Kid and Cobra Kai, while also incorporating the events depicted in the 2010 movie. Whether it serves as a direct sequel to the series is anyone’s guess at this point, seeing as how we have yet to know how it ends, but regardless, we’re just excited to finally be able to go to the movies for what’s sure to be a heavy dose of nostalgia that will rival the Netflix show, because it’s been two years since the announcement of the new film, and our bodies are more than ready.
