There are two things many people want for the holidays: A white Christmas and Chanel under the tree. The storied maison is making both of those wishes come true with their new limited-edition version of Chanel N°5 Eau de Parfum that seems like it was plucked out of a fairy tale—or a snow globe.

The latest version of Chanel N°5 Eau de Parfum comes in a collector’s edition bottle that is lightly dusted with hints of snow, giving it a textural finish. “As a tribute to the couturière Gabrielle Chanel, the shoulders of the iconic bottle are adorned with delicate silk,” says Sylvie Legastelois, Head of Packaging & Graphic design creation at Chanel. “This silk gives the bottle a frosty appearance.”

Available in two sizes, 100 milliliters eau de parfum and the 900 milliliters parfum, the N°5 Eau de Parfum Spray Collector’s Edition captures both the holiday spirit and the aesthetic of Coco Chanel. “This natural, white silk dresses the bottle, which magically transforms it into a frosty work of art,” Legastelois says. “The delicacy and simplicity of this snow mantle immerses us in the Christmas universe as if in a fairy tale.”

The inspiration behind the limited-edition bottle was sparked by a meeting between the house of Chanel and an ancestral process from the Cévennes, a region in France, which is the cultivation of silk. “The mythical bottle of the N°5 perfume is adorned with silk on the top of the cap and the shoulders of the bottle,” Legastelois says. “The silk is delicately placed by hand on each bottle, making it unique and precious.”

The craftsmanship of the bottle is a technical and artisanal feat, particularly the textural elements of the snow. “The natural silk leaves are cut one by one and placed by hand on each part of the bottle in one or several layers to create a subtle gradient,” Legastelois says. “This meticulous work makes each bottle unique and precious. The greatest challenge was the time required to develop this innovative process, finding the right balance of silk proportions, the time needed for the application while ensuring the quality and durability of this garment.”

Legastelois’s favorite part of the journey was making the dream a reality. “This approach was a challenge; seeing the first bottle for the first time was extremely moving,” she says. “Only the work and expertise of our artisans made this dream come true.”

Out of all the Chanel fragrances, selecting N°5 for this keepsake bottle was a natural choice. As the most famous perfume in the world that has mesmerized people for over a century, Chanel has given the fragrance new life many times before, including the recent Chanel N°5 L’Eau Drop in a new futuristic limited-edition bottle. Chanel N°5 has had many bold-faced fans, from Marilyn Monroe to Jackie Kennedy Onassis. In the UK alone, Chanel N°5 had 2.25 million users in 2020, according to Statista, and accounts for about one-third of house’s annual revenue.

“The N°5 perfume is the backbone of our house,” Legastelois says. “It alone embodies all the values of Chanel. Since 1921, the year of its creation, ahead of its time, it has never ceased to surprise us.” But it’ll make the perfect surprise for someone this holiday season.
