Science Secretary failed to declare Taylor Swift tickets on time

Dear oh dear. Science Secretary Peter Kyle has certainly had better days in office. Despite Kyle insisting in the Commons today that his party ‘raises standards in public life’, it has now emerged that the Science Secretary, er, failed to declare his own gifted Taylor Swift tickets in time. Talk about hypocrisy…

Members of parliament have 28 days to register gifts – yet Kyle registered £584 worth of Eras tour tickets almost 50 days after receiving the extravagant donation. The Science Secretary received the tickets from the Football Association on 15 August, however it took him until 3 October to log the perk. How curious.

The revelation marks another bump in the road for Kyle, after the Science Secretary was quizzed in Westminster today on why the £66,000 donated by Emily Middleton’s former consultancy firm to his office was not mentioned in transparency documents. Kyle and his Tory counterpart Andrew Griffith had a testy stand-off in the Commons today over a civil service appointment after it transpired that Labour failed to disclose Emily Middleton’s links with the party in crucial transparency forms. Griffith interrogated the Labour man on the matter, declaring: ‘It’s clear the Secretary of State failed to mention the conflict of interest as required by the ministerial code. In the words of the Prime Minister’s favourite pop star, some would say he’s ‘Guilty As Sin’.’ Ouch…

And Griffith isn’t finished with Kyle yet. On the latest development, the shadow science secretary commented:

Just hours after telling the house that his party ‘raises standards in public life’, Peter Kyle has himself broken the rules by failing to declare freebie Taylor Swift tickets on time. With Labour’s Taylor Swift Love Story set to cost them another Fortnight of bad press, Peter Kyle will know All Too Well that delaying his declaration to avoid Parliamentary scrutiny is no way to Shake It Off.

Burn…
