Workers tasked on AI to enhance national productivity — Appointments — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Human Resource (HR) practitioners have called on governments at all levels and workers in the private sector to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve individual performance and enhance national productivity.

They made the call during the 22nd yearly conference of the Oyo State chapter of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), which had the theme: ‘Critical Roles of Human Resource Professionals in Organisational Success and Nation Building.’

While speaking, the CIPM President, Ahmed Gobir, said AI is not a threat to the practice of human resource management but a tool for the enhancement of performance and huge outputs. He urged all to incorporate the use of the technology in their daily work.

Gobir said: “As HR professionals, we have a critical role to play not only in businesses but also in the country because those, who lead us are the people managers. The president, state governors, and chief executives are all people’s managers.”

Noting that AI could help HR practitioners, as it could help those working in public service or the private sector enhance their performances and improve productivity.

The state chairperson of CIPM, Omolara Onipede, said all HR practitioners must be AI-compliant, stating that organisations are migrating from onsite to remote work.

While stating that the conference was a call for HR personnel to be more strategic and proactive, Onipede pointed out that the profession has been at the forefront of driving successes in organisations which translates into nation-building.

She urged the government to embrace strategic HR and fund activities relating to the human capital department.

The Oyo State HoS, Olubunmi Oni, who was the keynote speaker at the event, emphasised the need for HR professionals to develop new skills and competencies to manage a changing workforce.

The HoS said rapid technological advancements, globalisation, shifting workforce demographics, and evolving employee expectations require human resources personnel to be more agile and forward-thinking.

She said: “The rise of artificial intelligence and automation, for instance, presents both opportunities and challenges for HR.  While these technologies can improve efficiency and productivity, they also require HR professionals to develop new skills and competencies to manage a changing workforce.”

In his remarks, the conference guest speaker, Wale Adediran, called on HR professional bodies to establish the capacity to develop blueprints for embedding Strategic Human Resource Management (S-HRM) in public and private organizations.

Adediran, who is an expert in human capital management and former president of CIPM said: “CIPM should constitute a body to regularly review the state of our nation-building, identify the role of S-HRM in the advancement of our nation-building efforts, put forward updated optimum proposals for effective political and economic structure, talent pipelining, leadership development, human capital development, change management, and other S-HRM gaps in the MDAs.”
