As an actor, Kevin Bacon is famous for roles in a long list of iconic films like Footloose, A Few Good Men, and Apollo 13, just to name a few.

He’s also a talented singer, songwriter, and musician who currently tours with his brother as part of their folk-rock duo, The Bacon Brothers.

His many fans who follow him on social media look forward to his upbeat, positive musical posts where he highlights his favorite songs and albums, and often performs his own version of much-loved cover songs, sometimes accompanied by his wife, Kyra Sedgewick, and frequently in front of the goats and other animals on their family farm.

So, when American Greetings asked if he’d be interested in doing a personalized, digital birthday card, allowing him to choose the song, the arrangement, and the setting, he thought, why not? He joins a number of other superstars like Dolly Parton, Smokey Robinson, Laney Wilson, Meghan Trainer, Martin Short, Shaq, and more, on the ecard platform.

“I looked at some of the examples of other people that had been doing it and I thought it would be fun,” Bacon says. “We talked about the lyrics, what would happen from a musical standpoint, the key, the arrangement, all that stuff. They were nothing if not collaborative and American Greetings has a really, really great team.”

He chose a parody of the 1980s Romantics song “What I Like About You.” It’s done in a farm setting complete with animals, and even includes some of Bacon’s signature Footloose dance movies.

While the ecard is customized using a person’s specific name and age, it’s done the old-fashioned way without the help of artificial intelligence.

“No, it’s not AI,” Bacon explains, “and that’s what’s interesting about it. I sat there and spent at least three hours recording every individual name. I don’t know how many names I recorded, but it was a lot.”

The same is true with individual ages.

“You know how I say in the song, ‘Today you’re 25, today you’re 50, and so on. I had to go from 1 to 100 singing every one of those numbers, every one of those lines. They really have it down to a system.”

For Bacon, music is a common thread throughout much of his life. He and his brother, Michael, are currently on tour with shows in October and November in Utah, Texas, and the Carolinas.

“I love to play,” Bacon says. “Everything around it is challenging, to get to the different places and fit it into my schedule. The plans, trains, and automobiles that it takes to tour is a challenge, but when it comes to the actual shows, they’re better than ever. We put out a new record this year called Ballad of the Brothers, and it feels like it’s the best stuff we’ve ever done, but that’s just me.”

He also stays busy with acting and just wrapped up shooting on a Netflix mini-series called Sirens with Julianne Moore (release date to be determined). He stars in the Blumhouse horror series called “The Bondsman” set to stream on Amazon next year.

“The Bondsman has a musical element which was really fun,” Bacon says. “Jennifer Nettles (solo artist, as well as member of the country duo Sugarland) is my co-star. She’s a great songwriter and performer and we got to write songs together for it. So, I really enjoyed that.”

He also spends a lot of time creating music on social media. Bacon’s wife, Kyra Sedgewick, often “co-stars” in his music vignettes.

“Whenever I share a social media request I have for her, she knows there’s going to be some rehearsal involved,” he says with a laugh. “And knowing me, there’s going to be multiple takes because rarely is it one take and we walk away. But she’s a willing partner and a good sport.”

He’s found there’s a lot of joy in sharing music. He even started doing something called the “Monday Blues” where he highlights songs that have lifted him out of the doldrums in the hope it might help someone else. Music is a universal language that connects us all.

“When it comes to covering songs, singing to the goats, singing with Kyra, or for an American Greets card, these are things I like to do and share,” Bacon says. “I love music, I love listening to it, I love writing and playing it, and I love singing it.”
