WVU, Shepherd lose football games over weekend | News, Sports, Jobs
SHEPHERDSTOWN — Interceptions played major roles in last week’s football losses by both West Virginia University and Shepherd University.
The Mountaineers were coming off a morale-lifting win at Oklahoma State University, but quickly fell behind unbeaten Iowa State University after their quarterback, Garrett Greene, was intercepted twice before halftime.
Struggling to get back from a 14-0 deficit saw the thrice-beaten Mountaineers finally lose, 28-16, to even their record at 3-3. The Cyclones went to 6-0 and shared the Big 12 Conference lead with fellow league unbeatens Brigham Young University and Texas Tech.
Rocco Becht, son of former WVU Athletic Hall of Famer Anthony Becht, threw for one Cyclone TD and running back Carson Hansen had three short-yardage scoring runs.
WVU had shaved points off the early Iowa State lead and trailed only 14-10 before Hansen’s second short scoring run.
A third Cyclone interception led to Hansen’s last TD run to make it a 28-10 lead, before the Mountaineers’ last score brought the count to 28-16.
After gouging out nearly 400 rushing yards the week before, in dispatching Oklahoma State, the Mountaineers managed only 148 ground yards in losing to the Cyclones, who are off to their best start since 1938.
Further adding to WVU’s disjointed woes were several high snaps to quarterback Greene standing yards into his backfield. Those bollixed running plays all lost yardage.
The Mountaineers see once-beaten Kansas State (5-1) in Morgantown tomorrow.
Shepherd’s offense suffered four interceptions in its 35-14 loss at West Chester. Shepherd came in with a 4-1 record and West Chester was only 1-4.
The homestanding Golden Rams led 21-7 by halftime and salted away their second win with 206 rushing yards.
West Chester quarterback Cooper Jordan rushed for 131 yards and one ground score while passing for two other TDs.
Shepherd’s two touchdowns came from Jordan Barnett on a three-yard run and Malakai Brown on a six-yard run.
Powell actually completed 24-of-39 passes but the four interceptions seemed to override those successes. Brown (seven receptions) and Cam Dorner (six catches) paced Shepherd’s receivers.
The Rams had 10 tackles from Brett Kwola and eight more from Harold O’Neal.
One of Shepherd’s two scores was set up by a 77-yard kickoff return by Thad Standfield.
Now 4-2 overall, the Rams are at home tomorrow, to host winless Millersville University (0-6) at noon.
