Chris Pratt had to get permission from wife Katherine Schwarzenegger to film movie with Millie Bobby Brown

Chris Pratt has revealed that he had to get ‘permission’ from his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger to sign on for his upcoming film The Electric State, in which he stars alongside Millie Bobby Brown.

Speaking at a panel for the Netflix movie at New York Comic Con on Thursday, Chris, 45, explained: ‘I had intended to take a chunk of time off to be home and then I read this script and I was like, “ahhhhh f**k, I guess I have to do this movie”. It was so good and opportunities like this just don’t come around that often.

‘It has themes that are so resonant and important for today regards to technology and humanity. So it’s just a special film and when something like this comes along, you have to do it,’ the Guardians of the Galaxy actor continued.

‘And I had my wife even read it and she was like, “Yeah, I think you have to do this movie”, so I got permission from mama, and I came and got to play with the boys and the girls,’ Chris added, referring to his costar Millie, 20, and the Russo Brothers – who directed the sci-fi adventure film.

Chris plays the role of eccentric drifter Keats in the film, while Millie – who looked stunning in a silver playsuit at Comic Con – portrays Michelle, an orphaned teenager who traverses the American West with a sweet but mysterious robot, and Keats, in search of her younger brother.

‘It’s so original, it’s a huge swing, and I thought that this might be… I don’t know… maybe my last opportunity to be in a big movie like this [and] I have to look at every opportunity like that,’ Chris said.

‘It was just such a great story, I was moved to tears reading it, and you’ll be when you get to see the movie. You’ll see it’s incredible story, it’s so beautiful, it’s so original,’ he added, before going on to praise Millie.

‘We met when she was very much a child at the Kids’ Choice Awards,’ Chris revealed. ‘And I remember just from that moment, she was so sweet and innocent and pure.

‘And of course, I’m a huge fan of Stranger Things and I’ve been watching her body of work. It’s been awesome to watch her career take off and to see her take over and start to rule the world, and so I was really eager to work with her.’

Referring to Millie and her husband Jake Bongiovi, who was on set every day, Chris gushed: ‘They’re just totally awesome and normal people who live extraordinary lives, and I can see the person in that because I feel kind of the same way.

‘And so we had a great time. We became fast friends and you can’t get rid of this, sorry!’ the Parks and Recreation star added.

‘I’m very glad to have you as my friend,’ Millie replied, before admitting that she felt ‘intimidated’ when she first walked on set of The Electric State.

‘Of course it’s intimidating, I’m 19, I have to be here, and I have to give you 50 percent and I was intimidated,’ she recalled.

‘And then he [Chris] walks on the set and he’s like, “Heeeeeeeey”, as if he’s known me my whole life and I was like, “oh I feel seen and loved already,” and it was an immediate click.

‘Every single take he would make me laugh and I think just having that kind of energy in any workplace – but on set specifically – creates this sense of trust and love and friendship that I think transpires onscreen, which I think is really special and really rare,’ the Stranger Things star added.

Millie also revealed that she took inspiration from nineties Drew Barrymore for her role as Michelle and admitted that she ‘went into it maybe on the cockier side,’ and said the movie ‘challenged’ her as an actor.

The Electric State arrives on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
