The Government of India has agreed to defer debt payments and provide debt relief to Malawi if necessary, as part of a broader debt restructuring initiative.

Permanent Secretary at the Indian Foreign Office, Arun Kumar Chatterjee said this during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Friday where he provided an update on the visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Malawi.

Chatterjee said technical teams from both countries are engaged in discussions to find a mutually beneficial solution to the debt issue.

He said: “Currently, there are no discussions on extending a line of credit.”

Meanwhile, Murmu has disclosed that her government will set up a permanent hospital in the country specifically to provide artificial limb replacements.

This initiative aims at helping Malawians who travel to India for such treatments.

Murmu made the announcement during bilateral talks with President Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Friday.

During the closed-door discussions, the two governments signed several memoranda of understanding in arts and culture, sports, youth affairs, and pharmacy.

Briefing journalists after the two heads of government’s meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo indicated that Chakwera appealed to the Indian Government to enhance efforts to boost trade between the two countries and strengthen bilateral relations.

Said Tembo: “Chakwera also acknowledged the support we receive from India on the global stage, particularly in multilateral organisations where India advocates for the least developed countries to ensure they receive a fair deal.”

Earlier in the day, Murmu visited the War Memorial Ground in Area 13 and the Kamuzu Mausoleum in Lilongwe as part of her three-day visit to Malawi.
