Tom Holland Is Filming A Big MCU Project Before Spider-Man 4, and Fans Will Find It Interesting

Key Takeaways

  • Tom Holland may appear in upcoming Avengers film before starting work on Spider-Man 4, as suggested by a credible insider.
  • Avengers 5 and Spider-Man 4 set to start filming in mid-2025 in the UK, with Holland focusing on Avengers first.
  • Uncertainty looms over upcoming Avengers movie’s execution and narrative planning following undisclosed changes.

While fans are eager to see more of Spider-Man following the end of Tom Holland’s massively successful Home trilogy, a recent report from a trusted insider suggests that the star and his iconic character might have another Marvel Cinematic Universe project to swing into before starting on a fourth solo film.

The Spider-Man franchise has seen massive success with its live-action adaptations, starting with the Raimi trilogy in the early 2000s and a two-film reboot in the early 2010s before being rebooted once more with Tom Holland in the leading role. The resulting Home trilogy would not only be a massive, well-received success and bring together all three live-action Spider-Men for its groundbreaking climax but would do so well that the trilogy finale film Spider-Man: No Way Home would receive a second theatrical release. After putting out a nigh-impossible-to-follow trilogy in conjunction with Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios would immediately start plotting a follow-up.

Despite the stellar end found in No Way Home, Spider-Man 4 is still en route with a veteran MCU director attached to bring the project to life. However, it seems that this highly-anticipated project might not be the immediate priority for Holland or Spider-Man according to a recent report. Well-known source Daniel Richtman revealed on his Patreon page that despite having the Spider-Man 4 solo project to lead, Holland will be filming scenes for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film before going off to start work on the former. Richtman has previously disclosed that Holland’s part in the next mainline Avengers story is far more significant than the fairly small part he played in taking down Thanos during the Infinity Saga,

While things are open to further speculation, it is currently believed that both Spider-Man 4 and Avengers 5 will begin filming in the second quarter of 2025, with Avengers set to start in May and Spider-Man potentially kicking off at any point afterward. Richtman seems to believe that Holland will focus entirely on filming his parts for Avengers for at least a month before turning his attention to his own solo project. Since both projects are going to be filmed in the UK, the switch won’t be overly cumbersome for the star, and he’ll be on hand to attend to reshoots and collaborative scenes on Avengers. Spider-Man is only one member of a stacked Avengers: Doomsday cast, so there’s definitely a lot of filming to get through and schedules to work with.

It’s unclear whether the upcoming Avengers projects will actually take a lesson other multiverse movies failed to learn from Spider-Man: No Way Home and not screw up the execution. With so much uncertainty, there’s at least some comfort to be had knowing that more experienced stars like Holland will be lending their performances to the mainline films early on. However, the timing of this filming seems a bit worrisome. Having Holland film now means that there’s at least something close to a complete script, just months out from the franchise having to jettison Jonathan Majors and his Kang the Conqueror character(s) from the central antagonist role following a conviction in his abuse case. It’s unclear how much the project had to pivot from what was previously on the table for the project when it was still called The Kang Dynasty, but the timeline seems like it could be a lot more generous.

While it’s clear from the outside looking in that the next Avengers film shouldn’t try to top Endgame, with so much potential box office money and prestige in the equation, it’s hard to see Marvel Studios taking the same slow and steady approach that set up the foundation for Infinity War and Endgame. The reality of Robert Downey Jr. reportedly commanding a small fortune for his appearance and other members of the ensemble cast also being compensated handsomely, the powers that be are far more incentivized to go for a major event film instead of a meaningful narrative investment that won’t pay off for another four years.

The Spider-Man: Home trilogy is currently available to stream on Netflix, with Avengers: Doomsday set to premiere theatrically in May 2026.
