Music at the Market brings peeple togehter

Though 2024 was the first year for the event, there’s hope that it could turn into an annual one after a successful opener

A sunny and warm Saturday was the setting for a day of music and fundraising at the Town Square for the Nantyr Shores junior and senior bands.

The event dubbed Music at the Market included guest musicians and local vendors.

Nantyr Shores Triton junior and senior concert bands brought home gold this year from the MusicFest Nationals.

Saturday’s event was planned to help with the costs of the music program.

Travel to festival and competitions costs the students and their families greatly noted Liann Ackerman, head of The Triton Music Parent Council. She said they also arranged for 22 locally-based vendors to be on site and offer their goods to those out for the event, many of them very small and just starting out Ackerman added.

The Around the World in 80 Tacos truck was a busy spot for the hungry crowd while local musician and Nantyr grad Kyle Wauchope was on hand with his guitar followed by The Fitzees joined on stage by Patty & Friends as a combo group.

The junior and senior Tritons were playing separately and then en masse. Ackerman said students in grades 10 through 12 participated.She said currently there are around 120 in the schools music programs and over 60 participated on Saturday.

Donna Filman said she and her friend had no idea the event was going and heard the music in the air while out on a walk.

“What a great surprise for us, and to enjoy live music for free is something rare these days,” she said.

Ackerman hopes this is only the first edition of what she would like to become an annual event, and added if people missed the music this weekend, there will be another opportunity with a winter fundraising concert at the school on Dec. 12.
