Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet Calls for Greater Preservation of Khmer Martial Arts (Video inside)

Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for the preservation and greater promotion of Khmer traditional martial arts, with the aim of making them more renowned and encouraging broader practice.

The premier spoke on Sunday (Oct. 20) during the closing ceremony of the Samdech Thipadei Award for Khmer Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championships at the National Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei stated that in this era of globalization, it is easy to adopt or imitate other cultures. However, Cambodia has its own rich culture and civilization. While the government does not restrict the adaptation of fictional elements, this is an opportunity to preserve and promote the unique identity of Khmer martial arts. Many Khmer martial arts masters have already established training clubs abroad, and he encouraged the further expansion of Khmer martial arts training internationally.

Additionally, the premier revealed that discussions are underway about establishing a martial arts club in Cambodia for foreigners. Currently, some foreigners have already become Khmer martial arts coaches, contributing to the promotion of the sport on the international stage. Therefore, Cambodia, with its deep cultural heritage, must strive to promote this heritage, beginning with its own people. He also highlighted the importance of working together to widely disseminate Khmer culture and martial arts.

“I do not oppose those who practice karate or taekwondo—after all, I trained in karate and taekwondo myself. However, we must prioritize the promotion of Khmer martial arts. We are not against learning martial arts from other countries, but our own Khmer martial arts must continue to be promoted. The Cambodian people have a direct role in the development and preservation of our traditional Khmer martial arts. Please continue these efforts,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei urged all martial arts elders to document as much of Khmer martial arts as possible for future generations. He also announced the establishment of a committee dedicated to gathering the ancient secrets of Khmer martial arts for preservation. Regarding future competitions, he expressed hope for an increasing number of wrestlers to participate and demonstrate their skills on the international stage.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet congratulated those who received medals and encouraged those who did not. He noted that this collective success belongs to all involved. He shared that organizing a mixed martial arts competition had been his long-held dream, and he was moved to the verge of tears while witnessing the traditional Khmer martial arts performances.
