Georgia football moves to No. 2 in AP Top 25 Poll | Georgia Sports

The Georgia Bulldogs are inching closer to reclaiming the No. 1 spot in college football.

After handing the formerly No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns their first loss of the season, the Bulldogs moved into the No. 2 slot in the AP poll over the likes of undefeated Penn State and a one-loss Ohio State team.

Georgia moves up three places in the poll from its original No. 5 spot, while Oregon moves to the top from its former No. 2 ranking.

The Bulldogs looked back to their national championship caliber selves in their 30-15 win over Texas, as the defense brought in three turnovers against Heisman candidate Quinn Ewers and rising-star Arch Manning. Texas has now lost its last five home games against top-five opponents.

“These players bring the best out of me,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said following the game. “They tried to rob us with calls in this place [Texas]. And these guys are so resilient.”

The offense also looked like one of the nation’s best, despite Carson Beck struggling throughout the night. Florida-transfer Trevor Etienne held it down in the ground game, finishing with three trips to the end zone and 87 yards on 19 carries in his most dominant showing of the year. The 15-point victory was the most lopsided by a No. 1 team at home since Notre Dame’s 31-16 win at Pittsburgh in 1982 — when Dan Marino was still the quarterback at Pitt.

“Nobody gave us a chance. Everybody doubted us,” Smart said about ESPN’s “College GameDay” choosing Texas to sweep the Bulldogs. “Did you watch the show this morning? I didn’t because I was in meetings, but I got 8,000 texts about it.”

Georgia moves to 6-1 this year and 4-1 in the SEC following the win. The Bulldogs now look ahead to Florida, who it faces on Nov. 2 in the “war for the oar” in Jacksonville, Florida following a bye week. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
