Oman OPAZ inks agreement with Jordan’s ASEZA to boost economic development

Muscat – The agreement aims to boost economic and investment development in the special economic zones in both countries.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by H.E. Eng. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of OPAZ and by H.E. Nayef Hamidi Al-Fayez, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the ASEZA.

The MoU covers cooperation in a number of economic areas of common interest, including attracting investments to special economic zones, and exchanging knowledge and expertise in the field of laws, regulations, bylaws and procedures related to the management, operation and development of special economic zones between the two countries.

The two parties will study the possibility of establishing joint projects to enhance and develop cooperation between them, in addition to establishing an institutional framework at the international level for the regions in both countries. This is expected to enhance their competitiveness, cooperation and integration in various fields.

The agreement stipulates the exchange of expertise between the two parties within the framework of managing, operating and developing the special economic zones of both countries in the fields of urban planning, facility management, and the investment environment, including smart city applications and the possibility of extending it to areas supervised by both parties.

The MoU also seeks to cooperate in exchanging relevant data and information and exchanging expertise in the field of managing, financing, implementing and operating infrastructure projects in accordance with the investment rules in force in the two countries.

The MoU also covers areas of cooperation in implementing joint promotional programmes and coordination in regional and international conferences and seminars related to investment activity in special economic zones, exchanging expertise and experiences in the field of training employees in special economic zones, in addition to exchanging studies and research related to the experiences of special economic zones.

In the logistics sector, the MoU stipulates direct and indirect coordination to benefit from transportation facilities, storage and distribution facilities in order to open new export outlets and increase the volume of exports from the special economic zones of the two countries.

This agreement is expected to facilitate meetings between Omani and Jordanian investors and local and international trade and business institutions.

On the sidelines of signing the MoU, the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, and the accompanying delegation visited the most prominent projects in the region, such as Duqm Port, the Dry Dock, and the Karwa Car Factory.
