India’s global capability centres (GCCs) are entering a new phase of growth in 2025, one defined by innovation, talent diversification and a push beyond metro boundaries. The upcoming National Policy on GCCs in the country aims to transform the sector from scale-driven support hubs into capability-led centres of innovation, R&D and global decision-making.

Rating agency ICRA projects that India’s GCC count will surpass 2,500 by 2030, up from around 1,700 today, and generate over $100 billion in annual revenue and expanding the workforce nearly twofold. From Microsoft to Goldman Sachs, global enterprises are deepening their India footprint, turning the country into the world’s GCC capital.

Here’s a look at the GCCs that expanded across India in 2025.

1. Walmart Global Tech

Walmart’s Indian technology arm, Walmart Global Tech, is expanding its presence in the country significantly. It has reportedly leased nearly 465,000 square feet of office space in Chennai to grow its GCC. The space, spanning five floors at Block 1 of the International Tech Park Chennai, was leased from Radial IT Park, reflecting the US retail giant’s continued commitment to India’s thriving tech ecosystem. This expansion comes on the heels of Walmart’s expansion in Bengaluru during the December quarter to establish its first GCC in India.

2. Rakuten

In April 2025, Japan’s Rakuten announced plans to invest at least $100 million in India and expand its workforce by 8% this year to bolster its global operations, as per reports. Currently, Rakuten employs around 4,000 people in India, 90% of whom are part of its tech staff. The India GCC manages roughly half of Rakuten’s 70-plus global businesses and operates from multiple locations, including two centres in Bengaluru.
