MCU Star Zoe Saldaña Reveals Why She Wants to Reshoot the Avengers Movies

Zoe Saldaña, the MCU star known for her role as the ruthless assassin Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has recently expressed her desire to go back in time and reshoot her character’s journey in the Avengers movies. While these what-if scenarios are now limited to the Disney+ show, it is interesting to learn that the star was feeling quite lost in her arc under the direction of the Russo Brothers. This revelation from Saldaña came during an interview with Variety for a game of “Know Your Lines,” where she dissected some of her most iconic lines from several movies and shared insights and epiphanies regarding them. Specifically, it was the Avengers movies by Russo Brothers that Saldaña wishes she could do differently.

“I wish I could go back and reshoot what Gamora was going through in the ‘Avengers’ movies. I was not quite understanding what the Russo Brothers [were doing]. They’re excellent filmmakers and the opportunity they gave me was of a lifetime. To highlight Gamora in such a way in their films is something I’ll always be grateful. I wish I could go back and redo it so I could push a little harder because it was such a great opportunity to play a daughter having issues with a dad and whether or not she’s having this opportunity to reconciliate or to simply just walk away. That would’ve been a great opportunity had I been a little more aware of it then.”

Saldaña joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014 with the first installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy as Gamora, the adopted daughter of the Mad Titan, aka Thanos. She went on to feature in two Avengers movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, where her complex relationship with Thanos and Nebula, her sister, took center stage.

Zoe Saldaña Believes James Gunn’s Movies, In Comparison, Were ‘Deep’

In comparison with her Avengers arc, the Guardians of the Galaxy star strongly believes that Gamora’s journey in the James Gunn movies was much more layered and emotionally resonant as she went on from being a hardened assassin to a loving sister and partner. It took the character a long time to open up about her traumatic past and let Peter Quill in and her interactions with the rest of the characters become truly meaningful. Saldaña thinks this was because Gunn went deeper into the character’s rich backstory, with the actress asserting her “pride” in being part of the MCU.

“I know it’s a Marvel movie, and we don’t like to use words like ‘deep’ and ‘Marvel’ in the same sentence, but I like to, and I take great pride in knowing that I was a part of great films that cater to a younger audience and that inspires a younger audience…

What [James Gunn] was doing was something really special. We were supposed to be these rejects that came with childhood traumas and disabilities and mental issues. He gave these characters space to be loved and to find a family within their friendship. It was a really important film now that I look back on it.”

Zoe Saldaña’s career has been consolidated after her participation in huge franchises. These are her best movies according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite now cherishing her time working on Guardians’ movies, Zoe Saldaña has made it clear that she would not want to return to Marvel following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even if the opportunity arose. She feels that Gamora’s chapter was closed beautifully, and it is not time for her to take up new challenges and move on to future projects. However, she does think the franchise would be foolish not to bring the titular team back with different characters and actors.
