It Follows Star Daniel Zovatto Looks Back on the Film 10 Years Later

Daniel Zovatto stars as serial killer Rodney Alcala as he hunts down unsuspecting women in the new Netflix film, Woman of the Hour. With long hippy hair and slightly more weight on him, it’s a far cry from his role in the film that arguably opened the doors of Hollywood to him a decade ago, It Follows. In that film, a very different killer stalked its prey — a ghostly, unseen force that followed and tormented a person after they had sex with the last infected victim (a demonic STD, essentially). Speaking to MovieWeb about Woman of the Hour, Zovatto took time on the 10th anniversary of It Follows to look back on the film.

“I’m so grateful of It Follows,” said Zovatto. “It honestly, you know, it started everything for me. And David Robert Mitchell is a great director. It Follows was a great experience. I made a lot of good friends in that movie. And, you know, I always knew that it was going to be awesome, dude. I really did.” He continued:

“I mean, I watched his first film, The Myth of the American Sleepover, which was great, but when I was in It Follows, I just, I don’t know, man. There was a way of how David was working the camera with Mike [Gioulakis], our DP, and the things that they were doing — I was very new, it’s 10 years old, but even then I was like, they’re making something special. And it’s great to hear people still love the movie and appreciate it. I can’t believe it was 10 years ago, bro. That’s crazy.”

After about nine years, fans of It Follows were given great news about a sequel, now titled They Follow. In June of this year, Maika Monroe gave an excited update about the film to Collider. “David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant. The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it. He’s very specific,” explained Monroe, who added:

“He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I’m like, “Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?” And I read it, and it’s just so fucking good. It’s so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s
so
cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more fucked up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.”

“I am so excited for this role,” continued Monroe. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited to delve into something. There’s a lot there to play with, and I think it’s going to be incredibly challenging, for sure, but so fulfilling. Working with David, I can’t wait.” We can’t either.
