MOTP Celebrates Double Victory at Flag Football Tournament

The Ministry of Tourism and Ports is proud to announce the exceptional performances of the Lynx and Cobras Cayman Islands teams at the Heroes Flag Football Tournament, held in Nassau, Bahamas, from October 12th to October 13th, 2024.

Representing the Cayman Islands, the Lynx (8-person Contact Women’s Team) traveled with a group of 18 players, supported by 2 coaches, 2 media personnel, and 1 physiotherapist. The Cobras (5-person Non-Contact Men’s Team) had a squad of 12 players, accompanied by 1 coach.

On day one, the Lynx secured two victories, defeating the Lady Avengers 13-2 and the Hawks 6-0, earning the top seed for the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Cobras faced challenges, losing to the Abaco Sharks 13-6 and the Unruly Bulldawgz 24-6, placing them as the number 4 seed.

On the second day, the Lynx continued their strong performance, defeating the Hawks 7-0 and clinching the championship with a 6-0 win, making them the 8-man Contact Women’s Champions. The Cobras bounced back, defeating the Unruly Bulldawgz 13-7 in the semifinals and winning a double-overtime thriller 13-12 against the Abaco Sharks, marking their first-ever international tournament victory.

Both teams showcased remarkable skill, teamwork, and determination. Together, they made their mark on this prestigious international tournament, securing victories that will go down in Cayman’s sporting history.

Scimone Chin was awarded the Women’s MVP for her standout performances throughout the tournament, while John Kanaroski took home the Men’s MVP award for his crucial role in securing the Cobras’ victory.

Special recognition also goes to Oliver Parker, Chief Financial Officer of the Ministry of Tourism and Ports, who not only coached both teams but also played on the Cobras team. His leadership and dedication were pivotal in these incredible achievements.

This event marks the first time that both the men’s and women’s Cayman Islands teams have won their respective divisions in the same international flag football tournament. The Ministry of Tourism and Ports is proud to have sponsored the teams and is thrilled to share their success with the community.
