Statistics Department to Relocate from Science Center to Maxwell Dworkin in 2026 | News

The Harvard Department of Statistics will relocate from the Science Center to Maxwell Dworkin Laboratory in January 2026.

In an email sent out by Statistics Director of Administration Michelle Monestime, department administrators asked concentrators and affiliates to provide input on the design of the new office.

The move — though not far — marks a significant shift for the Statistics Department, which has been housed in the Science Center for more than five decades.

According to the email from Monestime, “four prints of inspirational design styles associated with department zones or subjects” will be posted in the current statistics department suite in the Science Center. Students and affiliates are encouraged to provide feedback on the design elements by writing their thoughts about each respective design on a piece of paper and sticking it on the prints. There will also be an opportunity for students to provide verbal feedback in real time.

The Maxwell Dworkin Laboratory was designed to and has housed computer science and electrical engineering, consists of large lecture halls, faculty offices, student lounges, and an Applied Physics research lab.

Following the opening of the new $1 billion School of Engineering and Applied Sciences complex in Allston in 2021, Harvard began the process of downsizing the SEAS Cambridge Campus, which was primarily centralized in the Maxwell Dworkin Laboratory and Pierce Hall, which was located next door.

Then-SEAS Dean Francis J. “Frank” Doyle III announced in 2021 that Maxwell Dworkin would be rearranged and renovated to accommodate the needs of the SEAS Cambridge campus plan. It is unclear whether Pierce Hall will soon follow suit.

As the renovations planning committee designs the Statistics Department’s new space behind the Science Center, students have until Wednesday, Oct. 30, to share their thoughts on the plans for the new interior.
