IASST and Bharat Biotech Join Forces to Launch Probiotic Health Solutions from Northeast India

Guwahati, Oct 24: Probiotic products from Northeast will now offer natural solutions to lifestyle diseases such as lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has entered into a significant research and development collaboration with Bharat Biotech International (BBIL).

The focus of this partnership is to bring innovative health products to market, derived from probiotics isolated from traditional fermented foods of Northeast India. These probiotics, studied extensively by IASST, show great promise in combating metabolic diseases, enhancing gut health, and promoting healthy ageing.

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of this collaboration for Northeast India’s bioeconomy. He pointed out that the region’s rich biodiversity, especially its wealth of traditional fermented foods, plays a crucial role in this initiative. “This agreement is a milestone for IASST, aligning with the broader vision of promoting the region’s bioeconomy through scientific innovation,” he said during the signing ceremony.

The partnership between IASST and Bharat Biotech aims to commercialize innovative probiotic technologies developed by IASST. Bharat Biotech, renowned globally for its excellence in biopharmaceuticals and vaccines, will support the translation of these scientific discoveries into market-ready products. Pre-clinical and clinical studies will be conducted to ensure that these probiotics meet the necessary regulatory standards and demonstrate efficacy in addressing metabolic diseases.
