Comic Book Action Movie Dredd Starring Karl Urban Is Now Free to Stream

Dredd has a complicated history with big screen adaptations, but the best version yet is now streaming completely free. Based on the 2000 AD series of comic books, Dredd takes place in a dystopian future where human survivors are crammed into Mega Cities. The movie follows the titular Judge Dredd and his rookie Cassandra, as they investigate a vicious drug ring in Mega-City One’s worst tower block. Dredd is now streaming for free, without the need for a subscription, on Tubi. Directed by Pete Travis, the movie features a surprising cast, which includes Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Domnhall Gleeson, Wood Harris, and Langley Kirkwood.

The movie received good reviews upon its theatrical release in 2012, sitting at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it failed to score big at the box office, earning just $41 million, against an estimated budget between $30-45 million. The official synopsis for the movie reads:

“In a dystopic future, coldblooded policeman Dredd (Urban) and psychic rookie Cassandra (Thirby) investigate three brutal murders in a tower block where they stumble upon a drug den run by the vicious drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey).”

Fans are still trying to deduce why Dredd flopped so hard in theaters, considering it is still one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. Everything from the iconic costumes, to the performances, the story, the cinematography, and the stunning action sequences are expertly crafted. Thankfully, Dredd has found a second life after being released on home video and streaming. The film is now considered a cult-classic of the comic book genre.

Will We Ever Get Dredd 2?

Thanks to the movie’s cult status, Dredd 2 could still be a possibility. Despite the original’s shortcomings at the box office, studios occasionally get the urge to begin development on a long-awaited Dredd sequel. Dredd 2 has bounced in and out of development for over a decade, and audiences are none the wiser as to if it will ever happen.

Way back in 2014, Urban spoke to MovieWeb about a potential Dredd 2, revealing that the movie would be a prequel. The actor said, “there is a definite possibility. But, it is more likely that we will do the origins story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo.” In the decade since, Dredd 2 has bounced in and out of development more times than Karl Urban has appeared in Star Trek movies.

Dredd: A Forgotten Remake That Deserves More Love

Over a decade later, Dredd remains a forgotten remake that deserves a lot more love from fans.

The last update came in 2023 when Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion (who own the Dredd IP), said that rights negotiations were the reason the sequel is taking so long. Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Kingsley said:

“I have been working for years on trying to find the right business partner for [Dredd 2]. We’ve had conversations with all the big players. Conversations are still ongoing. But the terms that we’re being asked for, we can’t support. They’re not how we want to work. So we’re getting there. We’re making progress. But it’s slow, slow, slow. So yes, I want to get some more of it done. Obviously, I want to do cool stuff. There’s nothing to announce yet.”
