The Virginia men’s soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat at No. 5 Pitt on Friday at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first 20 minutes of the match featured chances for both teams, but after a scoreless quarter of the game, Pitt (12-3-0, 6-1-0 ACC) broke through with a flurry of goals in just over a 10-minute span.
The Cavaliers (7-5-3, 3-3-2) faced a 1-0 deficit as Pitt’s Luis Sahmkow got on the end of a low cross played into the center of the penalty area.
Pitt doubled its advantage 10 minutes later when Casper Svendby got on the end of a long ball over the top and finished for 2-0.
Pitt scored two more goals in just over a three-minute span, as Lasse Dahl and Casper Grening extended the lead to 4-0 before the halftime whistle.
In the 84th minute, Virginia pulled a goal back off a Luke Burns free kick. Luc Mikula got on the end of a dangerous ball played into the middle and his knock down was placed into the back of the net by Joaquìn Brizuela.

- The loss snaps a five-game UVA winning streak, its longest of the season
- The defeat is Virginia’s first in the month of October since a loss to then-No. 10 Denver (10/4/22). UVA was previously unbeaten in its last 11 matches in October.
- Virginia falls to Pitt for the first time in five meetings
- Virginia conceded four goals in a match for the first time since a loss to Maryland in Washington D.C. (9/5/22)
