JSW MG Motor India will continue to bring new models and innovations to the Indian market, said Neha Jain, Head – EV & Innovation Ecosystem, JSW MG Motor India, in an interview with Abha Rustagi, Associate Editor, Energetica India.
Que: How do you view the current state of India’s EV ecosystem? What role is JSW MG Motor India playing in strengthening the country’s EV adoption journey?
Ans: India’s EV ecosystem is growing rapidly, with strong momentum from technology advancements, policy support, and increased customer awareness. JSW MG Motor India works closely with partners and governments to build and strengthen a robust EV ecosystem in India by building awareness, expanding charging networks and building sustainable battery solutions including recycling and repurposing. We have recently partnered with real estate developer Confident Group and technology firm IONAGE Technologies to expand EV charging infrastructure under the MG Charge initiative where we are focusing on simplifying EV charging for residents by installing charging stations in residential complexes. By offering innovative EV ownership models and collaborating widely, JSW MG is actively shaping a robust environment for EV adoption in India.
Que: Which consumer segment do you see as the primary driver of EV growth in India: urban, rural, commercial, or fleet operators?
Ans: The biggest growth is being seen in the urban sector. Growing awareness, new policies, and better charging infrastructure in cities are making urban consumers primary drivers of EV growth. We are actively expanding our sales and after-sales support for EVs into Tier 2, Tier 3, and rural markets by opening new dealerships to boost accessibility for more customers.
Que: Charging infrastructure is often seen as a bottleneck for EV adoption. How is MG addressing this challenge?
Ans: Our focus on building robust EV charging infrastructure began well before the launch of our first EV- MG ZS EV, India’s First Pure Electric Internet SUV. We have been actively partnering with charging and technology partners, industry groups and government bodies to install fast chargers across cities and residential complexes, expanding accessibility and convenience for EV owners.
JSW MG Motor India offers six distinct charging solutions: home AC charging, public DC fast charging, portable chargers, destination charging, mobile charging vans, and unified EV charging platform, the eHUB by MG app. This platform enables users to easily locate, book, and monitor charging points, ensuring a seamless ownership experience.
Additionally, most of our key initiatives, such as EV SAHI HAI, MG Charge, and the eHUB platform, are designed to be brand-agnostic, extending support not only to MG users but also to EV owners of all brands. This inclusive approach underscores our commitment to fostering a unified and accessible EV charging ecosystem across India.
Que: There is a perception that EVs have high maintenance costs compared to ICE vehicles. How do you counter this?
Ans: EVs are built with fewer moving parts than traditional cars, so they require significantly less maintenance, and our service programs are designed to make running an EV affordable and straightforward. We have taken several innovative steps to address the challenges in EV adoption.
• Our Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model allows customers to pay a low upfront cost-plus a per-kilometre fee, making EV ownership more affordable.
• To combat range anxiety, the eHub by MG app offers access to India’s widest charging network with over 12800+ points, helping users plan trips confidently.
• MG also provides a lifetime warranty on batteries for the first owner, with warranty terms adjusted for ownership changes, ensuring trust in battery life.
• Additionally, a buyback program guarantees good resale value. Together, these measures make owning and maintaining an MG EV simple, cost-effective, and reliable.
• MG powers EV Sahi Hai – India’s first dedicated digital education platform offering reliable, comprehensive information to demystify electric vehicles and promote their adoption nationwide.
Que: What advancements is MG making in battery technology to improve range, efficiency, and safety?
Ans: JSW MG Motor India focuses strongly on battery safety and reliability. MG’s in-house battery assembly maintains high safety and performance standards with advanced thermal management systems to ensure battery longevity. We are advancing in battery technology to improve range, efficiency, and safety through multiple innovative measures.
Que: Do you see localised cell manufacturing becoming a near-term reality for India, and how is MG preparing for that transition?
Ans: We see localised cell manufacturing as a crucial and near-term strategy to make EVs more affordable and competitive. Since batteries account for nearly 40-45% of an EV’s cost, scaling up domestic cell production and securing local supply chains will directly reduce prices and improve accessibility.
MG focuses on designing dedicated EV platforms with modular, clean architectures to maximise efficiency. With an established EV battery assembly plant in Gujarat and ongoing exploration of cell manufacturing partnerships. This strategic focus on localisation, positions us well for India’s future EV growth and self-reliance in technology.
Que: What are MG’s future plans for expanding its EV portfolio in India?
Ans: Looking ahead, JSW MG Motor India will continue to bring new models and innovations to the Indian market. Expanding our NEV (New Energy Vehicle) lineup, strengthening local development, and advancing battery recycling programs are our top priorities as we work towards a greener and smarter mobility future.
