Aiming for gold: India’s tech future
India is at a crossroads in technology, and it needs to make some big changes to move from being just a helper in tech (the back-office) to being a leader (the front-office). Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, recently talked about how important this moment is. He believes we are entering a new era with generative AI, and unlike before, Indians are quickly using these new apps. But there’s a problem: most of these AI tools are not made in India.
Huang pointed out that India shouldn’t just send its data to other countries to get their technology back. He visited India to announce partnerships between Nvidia and some of the biggest companies here. He shared that he spoke to India’s government about AI six years ago, showing just how long this has been important.
India has the talent and resources to build its own AI technology, but so far, it hasn’t created any globally recognized AI labs. If India doesn’t develop its own technology, it risks staying in the background while other countries lead the way. The difference is clear: those who innovate can earn money even while they sleep, while those who only cut costs have to work hard for every dollar.
Data is a huge asset for India, but the country has only around 150 data centers compared to the U.S.’s 5,400. This is not enough to support the growing demand from AI. India has a chance to reinvent itself and become a leader in technology, but it will need everyone—both the government and private companies—to step up in research and building better infrastructure.
