Asean-Italy cooperation on space and smart technologies
The ‘Asean-Italy Cooperation Initiative on Space and Smart Technologies’ project concluded with an event at the headquarters of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) in Rome. This was recalled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to which the initiative – financed by the ministry itself, Directorate General for Globalization and Global Issues – falls within the “formal framework” of the partnership stipulated between the ministry and the Asean Secretariat and called Asean-Italy Development Partnerships (2022-2026).
The project – “presented by ASI in awareness of the interest of the national industrial and spatial community towards the countries” of the ASEAN area (Association of South-East Asian Nations), as well as of the importance of the region – was approved in June 2024 by the Asean Secretariat and, in particular, by the Committee on Science, Technology & Innovation (Costi) and by the Sub Committee on Space Technology & Applications (Scosa). The objectives of the project – the Farnesina recalled – are: “to allow a target group of young entrepreneurs and researchers from Asean member states (AMS) to learn about the state of the art and scientific progress on some thematic domains of the space sector for stimulate the growth of the emerging industrial ecosystem”. Furthermore, “foster the introduction of innovative practices highlighted during the lessons/seminars in the AMS’ space activities; create business opportunities, increase international presence, improve scientific knowledge on the basis of shared experiences, best practices and lessons learned”.
This evidence was provided by a “wide range of national industries, which intervened as business testimonials to stimulate and create lasting business-to-business relationships, collaboration networks and business meetings between start-ups and companies from Asean member states and of Italy”. And “increase the visibility of AMS space operators in the Italian and international space community and vice versa of the Italian space community in ASEAN countries” with the aim of creating “collaborations between ASI and ASEAN entities active in space”. The first part of the initiative took place last July while the second from 13 to 25 October when a delegation of 11 people from 9 ASEAN countries and 2 representatives of its Secretariat were invited to Italy to participate in the work of the International Astronautical Conference ( IAC) held between Milan, Turin and Rome.
