Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the UN Calls for End to US Embargo Against Cuba
New York, October 31, 2024 — In a strong call for diplomatic reform, Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Walton Aubrey Webson, voiced a plea to lift the United States’ decades-old embargo against Cuba. Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Webson joined representatives from nations worldwide, including Iraq, Uganda, Costa Rica, and Grenada, who echoed his call for change. He stressed that this longstanding embargo, in place for over six decades, has caused “untold stress to the people of Cuba” and continues to be an impediment to the country’s sustainable development goals.
“The international community and the Caribbean have long urged the United States to lift the trade embargo on Cuba,” Webson emphasized. He further expressed Antigua and Barbuda’s stance, urging the removal of Cuba from the U.S. Department of State’s list of state sponsors of terrorism, which he described as “unfair and unjust.” Supporting recent UN Human Rights Council statements, Webson argued that the designation lacks transparency and clarity, hindering Cuba’s potential to thrive and participate equitably in the global economy.
Addressing the impact of the embargo on Cuba’s ability to meet the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Webson underscored that “the economic, financial, and commercial siege applied against Cuba” continues to stifle the country’s progress. He highlighted that these restrictions also inhibit Cuba’s role in fulfilling commitments under the newly adopted Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and other international agreements.
Webson expressed gratitude for Cuba’s assistance across various sectors, including health, culture, and energy, noting that “Cuba’s generous technical support has enriched not only Antigua and Barbuda but the entire Caribbean region.” He expressed hope for a future where trade between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba can flourish unimpeded by restrictions.
Concluding his statement, Ambassador Webson called on both the United States and Cuba to come to the “table of diplomacy” to establish a new, mutually respectful relationship. The ambassador’s address reflects Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to fostering peace, cooperation, and sustainable development in the region.
