Monument Celebrates 50 Years of Agricultural Innovation at PAU | Ludhiana News
Ludhiana: In a striking tribute to farming and human evolution, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here boasts a unique sculpture — a 32-kilogram stainless steel wheat grain atop a grand deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) helix. The “Golden Jubilee Monument” at PAU’s Flag Chowk not only commands attention but also embodies the institute’s 50-year legacy in advancing the science of cultivation.
Hundreds of visitors and university community members pass by this massive artwork daily, yet few realize the depth of its design. Sculpted by 2023 Sahitya Akademi award-winner Swarnjit Savi, the structure’s monumental elements — including a wheat stalk, a plough, and a book — represent significant milestones in humanity’s agricultural and intellectual progress. Savi, also known for his writing, photography, and recent appointment as chair of the Punjab Arts Council, crafted the piece to reflect the journey from primitive tools to the genetic science of today.
Installed in 2012 to commemorate PAU’s 50th anniversary, the monument was envisioned to capture the evolution of agriculture and the central role of human innovation. Originally, more than a dozen artists were invited to propose concepts for the installation. Ultimately, Savi, who resides near PAU, was selected to design and build the artwork, a task he undertook in a local foundry.
“The concept of this sculpture began with the plough, the essential tool symbolizing the origin of modern agriculture,” Savi explains. “Language is also represented in the form of a book, showcasing human progression from symbols to complex communication.” The sculpture ascends from a plough through a wheel and gears, incorporating a ladder to the DNA helix, signifying advances in genetic science that impact agricultural practices today.
Detailing the choice of stainless steel, Savi highlights its durability and metaphorical resonance. “Some suggested fiberglass, but stainless steel better represents the shift from prehistoric eras to modernity,” he says.
Beyond the Golden Jubilee Monument, Savi’s other works include an installation at the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor lounge, which pays homage to Sikh scripture, and an artwork titled “Ekomkar and Rabaab” at the corridor’s zero point Chowk.

Scientists at Punjab Agricultural University’s KVK Patiala recommend farmers consider alternative fertilisers to DAP for wheat cultivation. Alternatives like NPK (12:32:16) and superphosphate are suggested, with application rates differing. The recommendations are based on soil testing results to ensure accurate nutrient needs, ensuring efficient wheat farming while maintaining nutrient balance.Boost agricultural production: The importance of scientific beekeeping in Goa
