Ben Stiller’s Pickleball Comedy Movie The Dink Adds Patton Oswalt & Chris Parnell

It may not be Dodgeball 2, but Ben Stiller is returning to the arena of sports comedies, and he’s bringing a whole host of beloved actors with him. The Dink will be the first film to bring Pickleball (the increasingly popular blend of tennis, squash, and table tennis) to the big screen. The new comedy is being directed by Josh Greenbaum, who is also currently working on the long awaited Spaceballs 2, from a script written by Sean Clements.

Per Deadline, Stiller will be joined on the court by some beloved actors, comedians, and a bona-fide sporting legend. Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille), Chris Parnell (Rick & Morty), Martin Kove (Cobra Kai), Christine Taylor (Dodgeball), Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live), and Aaron Chen (Fisk) have all joined the cast of The Dink. And, “you cannot be serious,” as John McEnroe, the man who managed to make tennis interesting to millions, will also be joining them on the court.

As well as Stiller, The Dink already featured a star-studded cast. Jake Johnson, Mary Steenburgen, Andy Roddick and Ed Harris are all confirmed to be bringing their A-game to the Pickleball court. Stiller is confirmed to be playing a supporting role in the movie. It is unclear if he will be a hero, or, as is the case with many of his past comedies, a detestable villain like White Goodman (Dodgeball) or Hal L. (Happy Gilmore). The Dink does not yet have a release date. The official logline reads:

“A washed-up tennis pro tries to save a club by reluctantly playing pickleball to earn his father’s respect.”

Will Dodgeball 2 Ever Happen?

If you can dodge a decade-long developmental hell, you can dodge a ball. Dodgeball, starring Vince Vaughn and Stiller, is one of the true greats of the absurd sports comedy genre. Alongside movies like Happy Gilmore, Caddyshack, Hot Rod, Blades of Glory, and more, Dodgeball has a devout cult-following and, despite its bonkers plot, managed to inspire thousands to start playing the titular sport.

Fans have been desperate to see Average Joes Gym return for a second tournament, but the balls have never lined up in the production’s favor. Rumors have circulated for years about a potential Dodgeball sequel. However, many turned out to be blatantly false. Last year, it was confirmed that Dodgeball 2 is in development. The report suggested that Vince Vaughn is eager to return to court as Peter La Fleur. However, no new developments have been announced in the year since.

Mostly known for the funny roles at the beginning of his career, Ben Stiller’s skills go beyond comedy. This is how Rotten Tomatoes ranks his best.

While Vaughn may be fair game for a return, Stiller is reportedly hesitant to wear the feathered and lethal hair of White Goodman. The news came via his co-star, Justin Long, who played Justin, a male cheerleader who daydreamed about one of his teammates. According to the actor, Stiller is worried about a poor sequel ruining the legacy of the original, which may be a result of Stiller’s failed return as Derek Zoolander in the panned Zoolander 2. Long said:

“I would love to do it and I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben is a little, what he told me on that podcast was that he’s a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much.”
