- Skoda Auto India Unveils Kylaq: The Company’s First Sub-4m SUV Set for January 2025 Launch
Skoda India unveils the Kylaq, its first sub-4m SUV, launching in January 2025. Priced from Rs 7,89,000, it offers spacious interiors, safety features, and modern design.
Mumbai – Skoda Auto India introduced its newest compact SUV, the Kylaq, in a global reveal today. Set to launch in January 2025 with a starting price of Rs 7,89,000 (ex-showroom), the Kylaq enters the competitive sub-4-meter SUV market as the company’s first model in this category, targeting both the Indian market and potential customers worldwide.
The Kylaq is designed with a balance of spaciousness, safety, and robust performance. Featuring 446 liters of boot space, six airbags as standard, and a distinctive “Modern Solid” design language, the SUV embodies Skoda’s approach to delivering both style and function. Powering the Kylaq is a 1.0 TSI engine producing 85kW of power and 178Nm of torque, available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Key Features and Design Innovations
Skoda’s Kylaq stands out with several segment-first features, such as ventilated, six-way adjustable front seats and a stowing space for the parcel tray, enhancing the overall practicality. The SUV also boasts a 25.6 cm infotainment screen, a 20.32 cm virtual cockpit for drivers, and an array of convenience features like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and wireless charging.
According to Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Skoda Auto, the Kylaq represents an important step in the company’s international growth strategy. “The Kylaq is designed in India, for India, and brings our Modern Solid design language to life with a robust look and extensive range of features at a competitive price point. With this vehicle, we aim to engage new customers in a fast-growing SUV segment,” Zellmer noted.
The Kylaq’s name reflects its connection to India, deriving from the Sanskrit term for “crystal” and drawing inspiration from Mount Kailash. Skoda engaged Indian consumers in a campaign to name the vehicle, resulting in the “Kylaq” moniker. The compact SUV joins the Kushaq and the larger Kodiaq in Skoda’s Indian lineup, furthering the brand’s push into diverse market segments.
Uncompromised Safety and Durability
Safety is a priority for Skoda, and the Kylaq includes over 25 active and passive safety features. From six airbags to stability control and brake assist technologies, the SUV aims to provide a safe and comfortable ride. The vehicle has also undergone extensive durability tests across 800,000 km of varied Indian terrain, ensuring it can withstand extreme climates and challenging roads.
The Kylaq’s Modern Solid design is highlighted by a sleek, bold front grille, “four eyes” headlight design, and a distinctive black rear with the Skoda wordmark. The car will be available in five colors, including an exclusive Olive Gold inspired by Indian landscapes.
Sustainable Manufacturing and Future Growth
Skoda manufactures the Kylaq at its Chakan plant, which is a water-positive and zero-waste facility powered by 30% solar energy. The company aims to increase this to 75% by 2026, aligning with global sustainability goals. With the Kylaq, Skoda targets an annual sales milestone of 100,000 vehicles by 2026, aiming to expand its reach within India’s rapidly growing SUV market.
“The Kylaq is a pivotal model for us,” said Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Skoda Auto. “With features that appeal to Indian consumers and an accessible price, it’s an exciting addition to our ‘Made in India, for India’ lineup.”
Skoda’s Kylaq is set to open for bookings on December 2, 2024, with its official launch scheduled for January 2025, marking an exciting new chapter for the company in the Indian market.
