Upcoming music gigs around Cyprus

Nicosia, Paphos, Larnaca and Limassol welcome more music nights this month, entertaining music buffs island-wide. Before the weekend arrives, several performances enrich the local nightlife scene. One of them is a 10pm gig at the New Division bar in Nicosia with The Sundercats.

Led by Cypriot singer-songwriter Alexis Sunder and his live band, The Sundercats will play soul, funk and head-bobbing grooves. With Alexis on the floor will be his steady collaborators Andreas Epaminondas on lead guitar, Frankiskos Petrides on drums and Andreas Papageorgiou on bass. Also joining them for this performance will be Jaded Jane.

Also happening in Nicosia this month is PianoFest3, four evenings of piano sounds by four talented Cypriot pianists (Orestis Magou, Nicolas Costantinou, Rami Sarieddine and Eleni Mavromoustaki). On November 7, 12, 20 and 28, piano recitals will be staged at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre with a repertoire rich in old and new piano masterpieces.

Larnaca will have its own pre-weekend gig. Savino Live will welcome the Kontovourkis & Co band who will bring their fiery energy to the stage this Friday. New songs, original music, much-loved grooves and both Greek and Anglo-American hits will sound. To warm up the crowd, young Cypriot musician Alexa Michael and her band will open the evening at 9.30pm.

Next week, Limassol will welcome jazzy tunes as the Alliance Française de Limassol organises the jazz concert Django and Paris Jazz on November 16. An 8.30pm concert will take audiences on a journey through the music of Django Reinhardt and French jazz. Bringing these soulful tunes to life at the old Port’s Plevsis Hall will be six Cypriot musicians – A.Rodosthenous, G.Morfitis, E.Michail, N.Ardanitou, S.Xidias and E.Ioannou

Paphos will also enjoy jazz-infused sounds very soon as Technopolis hosts a night of saxophone and jazz. On November 19, the Cypriot Saxophone Association will present two quartets, the Mirabilis and the Jazz4Sax, along with the TamaDuo. The evening begins at 8pm and promises a rich repertoire of soulful, jazzy and sax melodies as each ensemble takes the floor.
