Agency for Urban Development Delegation attend WUF 2024

The Agency for Spatial and Urban Development’s delegation, led by its head, Ioane Menabdi, participated in the 12th session of the World Urban Forum 2024 (WUF). The forum is being held in New Cairo from November 4 to 8, 2024.

At the World Urban Forum, held every two years, delegates from more than 180 countries around the world discuss their experiences and best practices in spatial and urban planning.

The head of the Spatial and Urban Development Agency participated in the panel discussions organized by the UN Housing Program (UN-Habitat) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He discussed integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals into the country’s spatial-territorial planning.

Special emphasis was given to the climate resilience component in the planning process of seaside towns, and the preparation of the coastal zone spatial development plan was discussed as an example. Delegates also discussed issues of sustainable urban transformation in Eastern Europe.

At the World Urban Forum, coordination meetings were also held between the countries of Eastern Europe, South Caucasus, and Central Asia, where the issues of the “middle corridor” and the future vision of urban planning of the cities on the Transaspian International Transport Road were discussed.

The participants also discussed the creation of a unified platform for sustainable development planning of highland settlements in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia and Georgia’s perspective as a leader.

Ioane Menabde presented the action plan developed within the First National Forum of Georgia in a panel discussion, during which representatives of different countries discussed spatial and urban development aspects.

After a 20-year interval, the World Urban Forum returned to the African continent for the first time this year. More than 35,000 participants from around the world attended the event.

Agency for Spatial and Urban Development

The Agency for Spatial and Urban Development was created in 2022 to coordinate national spatial and urban policy. Less than 20% of the territory is covered by spatial plans. The agency helps create the National Spatial Plan and also helps regional municipalities create land use master plans and/or more detailed plans.
