Original Harry Potter Star Pitches Return in Max Reboot After Their Character Wasn’t in the Films ‘Enough’

Warner Bros. is adapting Harry Potter into a TV series tentatively set to premiere in 2026. So far, there are no details about the upcoming cast or if the original stars will be attached to the project, but one actor has pitched a tentative return.

As the focus lies on who will be the next child stars to take over from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, there are many questions about who will play the adult actors, too. Speaking to IndieWire while attending the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Gary Oldman showed his interest in the reboot. The actor, who played Sirius Black, revealed that his character didn’t appear much in the eight films and he could attempt a new beloved character.

I love Sirius,” Oldman said. “He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.” The actor made his debut in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and had a brief cameo in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, before his heartbreaking demise in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Oldman returned for a brief appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two.

Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.

Although the actor admitted “no one’s approached me” for the reboot, he doesn’t expect to reprise his role as Sirius Black in the series. As the original casting raised some eyebrows given that Black was canonically younger in the book series, that doesn’t mean Oldman couldn’t try another role. “I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people,” said Oldman, echoing the same sentiment as other original Harry Potter stars before him. “Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore,” he teased.

The Harry Potter TV Reboot Might Go With a Different Cast

There are no official details about the casting, but several days ago, Warner Bros. advertised an open casting for the main trio — Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. The television series is currently in development, and there was no indication the series is planning to bring on any actors from the films and it looks like it might feature an entirely new cast.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played the titular character in the eight movies, also thought it would be best to start fresh. Replicating the magic of the original Harry Potter movies will be difficult, and bringing back any of the original stars might take away the shine from the new actors, who deserve a chance to leave their own marks.

However, that doesn’t mean the original actors couldn’t take on different roles. Although it’s impossible for any of the younger actors to reprise their roles, they are old enough to portray their parents or teachers. In Gary Oldman’s case, his talents weren’t used enough as Sirius Black, and he could reinvent himself as a new Albus Dumbledore. The original Harry Potter cast benefited from elite British actors, which is something difficult to replicate, and bringing some stars back in different roles might keep the magic going. However, at the same time, it could be distracting, which means Warner Bros. might opt for an all-new cast altogether.
