SUNY Sullivan hosts event to remember nuclear test victims with film screening and Q&A
LOCH SHELDRAKE- SUNY Sullivan will present Appreciation: The Tomiko West Story, a powerful documentary by director Micheal Dwyer, honoring the victims of nuclear tragedies, on Thursday, November 14th, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the SUNY Sullivan Student Union. It is open to the public and admission is free. The event aims to foster dialogue on the long-lasting consequences of nuclear tests.
The screening will be followed by a presentation from Larry Jay Tish, the producer and co-writer of the upcoming feature film Tickling the Dragon’s Tail, which explores the tragic story of the Lucky Dragon No. 5 and the nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. Tish will discuss the impact of these events on the survivors and how they continue to resonate today.
The event commemorates the horrifying events of March 1954, when the Japanese fishing vessel Lucky Dragon No. 5 was exposed to radioactive fallout from a hydrogen bomb test by the United States. Through the lens of this historical disaster, the discussion will emphasize the need for ongoing efforts in nuclear disarmament and global peace.
“Be seriously scared,” said Oishi Matashichi, who survived a lethal dose of radioactivity from a U.S. hydrogen bomb test on March 1, 1954.
After the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive Q&A session with Larry Jay Tish. The event will also include a multimedia presentation and performance art.
This event is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and community members. For more information, please contact the SUNY Sullivan Student Activities Office at 845-434-5750 x4303 or email studentactivities@sunysullivan.edu.
