A former University of Lethbridge athlete and member of the Kainai Nation has been named the recipient of the National Tom Longboat Award.

The Tom Longboat Awards recognize Indigenous athletes for their outstanding contributions to sport in Canada.

Apollo Hess, a three-time U SPORTS national champion and national record holder in the 50-metre breaststroke, made history as the first Indigenous swimmer to represent Canada at the Olympic Games, helping the team secure a fifth-place finish in the 4×100-metre mixed medley relay in Paris.

An inductee into the North American Indigenous Athletes Hall of Fame and recipient of the 2025 Team Canada Indigenous Athlete Award, Hess is being honored for his achievements in sport and his role as a trailblazer and role model for Indigenous athletes across the country.
