Jordan Chiles appeals to Supreme Court over 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medal

American gymnast Jordan Chiles has filed an appeal in the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland after being denied a bronze medal in the women’s floor event at the 2024 Olympics.

It is the latest appeal from Chiles, 23, who has already had two rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Romania’s Ana Barbosu was awarded bronze instead by the International Gymnastics Federation (Fig) following a Cas ruling.

Chiles had initially finished fifth but, after an inquiry with regard to the difficulty rating of her routine, officials upgraded her score to put her third.

But Barbosu and her team then appealed to Cas that the inquiry had been registered four seconds after the one-minute deadline allowed by Fig.

Cas is usually deemed the highest level of sporting authority on all legal matters.

Reports in US media had suggested the head of the Cas panel making the decision in the case had links to Romania, with Cas condemning “outrageous statements” that it was biased.

Lawyers for Chiles argue that Cas refused to consider video footage that “unequivocally proves” that the inquiry was submitted in time.

Last month, Chiles said she received online racist abuse after the decision to strip her of the bronze medal.

Chiles won gold in the team event in Paris, as part of a US team that included Simone Biles.
