Nigeria seeks trade policy review — Nigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News
Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI), has submitted a review of the nation’s trade policies to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The review is part of efforts to increase the nation’s share of global trade and secure maximum possible benefits from international trade. The review follows a report by the WTO secretariat and the Federal Government. It would the sixth review of the country’s trading policies since it became an active member of the global trade body in 1995.
According to the report submitted by the government, the country remains committed to the principles of the multilateral trading system as embodied in the WTO and intends to continue to intensify efforts to play a more active and collaborative role in shaping the direction of multilateral trade policies, particularly with respect to the pursuit of the objectives of the Doha Development Agenda (ODA), to achieve a fair, equitable and transparent trading system that provides a win-win situation for all players.
Nigeria is a signatory to multilateral agreements, which the government says it plans to implement with a view to ensuring the country’s effective integration into the global economy.
To substantially increase its share of global trade. The Federal Government envisages the strengthening of its negotiating capacity to maximise its participation in the WTO through developing a national communication strategy for adequate dissemination, domestication and implementation of the WTO agreements.
