Loki Director’s The Sims Movie Gets an Exciting Update

A feature film adaptation of the popular gaming franchise, The Sims, has been confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios. The word came about six months after rumors of the proposed film began to circulate on the internet.

Confirmation on the development of the film was reported by Deadline. Although plot details are a secret for now, it has been confirmed that Loki director, Kate Herron, will direct the film. The feature will be co-written by Herron and Briony Redman. Redman and Herron will also be executive producers on the project, which is being produced by Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, and Vertigo Entertainment, with The Sims team from EA.

The Sims game has been one of the best-selling video games since its debut in 2000, with its most recent expansion pack, The Sims 4: Lovestruck, being released this past July. The franchise began as SimCity prior to The Sims being launched. A film adaptation of the game was in the works in 2007 when 20th Century Fox bought the film rights, but that project never happened.

The Sims, published by EA and developed by Maxis, is a game in which players can create and control virtual people called “Sims.” The “Sims” live in a created world and engage in day-to-day activities like working and socializing. The open-ended game allows players to develop their characters without any objectives or storylines.

The original version of The Sims was only released physically and finding a playable copy is quite difficult these days. EA has not released the original version digitally, so players wanting it need to turn to resale sites like eBay for the games.

The Director is Known for Loki, The Last of Us

The film’s director, Herron, is best known for being the executive producer and director for the first season of Loki, airing on Disney+. The series, upon its release, was the most-watched Marvel Studios Disney+ series to date. Herron also directed Sex Education on Netflix and HBO’s The Last of Us. Herron and Redman as a team wrote the episode “Rogue” for the most recent season of Doctor Who.The episode was the first time the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) had a kiss with a character of the same gender as him in a genuinely romantic context.

LuckyChap had great success with the Barbie feature film, but time will tell how The Sims will fare as a feature film.The unexpected approach the studios took with the Barbie adaptation proved positive for movie audiences. The Sims mimics the lives of people in fantasy homes, akin to virtual dollhouses, so a similar approach could be taken with the game as with the Barbie dolls in the movie.

The Sims is a continuation of a partnership between LuckyChap and Amazon MGM Studios. Recently, the collaboration led to the release of My Old Ass, from writer-director Megan Park. Previously, the companies collaborated on Saltburn, a film that went onto become one of Prime Video’s top 10 worldwide film debuts.

The Sims movie doesn”t yet have a release date.
