Oldest living Socceroo receives OAM for service to football

The Socceroos’ oldest living player, Kevin O’Neill, received his Medal of the Order of Australia on Wednesday for service to football during a ceremony at Government House, Sydney.

The 98-year-old played 62 games for the Australian men’s national team from 1949 to 1959 including four games as captain, having debuted as cap #113.

In 2000, Mr O’Neill was inducted into the Soccer Australia Hall of Fame and in 2021, at the age of 95, he was recognised for being the oldest living former player of the Socceroos.

He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours on June 10, 2024.

Mr O’Neill is also an Inductee of the City of Cessnock Hall of Fame (Sport category, 2007) and an Inductee of Hunter Region Sporting Hall of Fame (1996).
