Malayalam movies to watch this Christmas 2024 season

Malayali movie buffs have an exciting line-up of movies to choose from this Christmas 2024 season. From superstar Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz to Unni Mukundan-starrer Marco and Aashiq Abu’s Rifle Club, an interesting set of movies will premiere in the theatres in Kerala in the coming days. But amid the grand theatrical releases, there are gems such as Pallotty 90’s Kids making their quiet premiere on OTT platforms as well. After enthralling audiences with a wide variety of characters, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal ventures into direction with Barroz, touted to be a children’s fantasy film. Along with direction, the iconic actor will also be portraying the titular role. Based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, the 3D film revolves around the titular character, who has been safeguarding Vasco da Gama’s treasure for centuries and has to pass it on to the true descendant of the Portuguese explorer.

Ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan is also collaborating with Mohanlal on the project, and most of their previous collaborations have been for noted projects. In a recent interview, Mohanlal said that whenever they work together Santosh Sivan wins a National Award, raising expectations for yet another pioneering work by the duo.

Touted to be an action thriller, Marco presents Unni Mukundan in a macho avatar. The film, a spin-off of the 2019 film Mikhael, is helmed by Haneef Adeni. The trailers and posters have given glimpses of the brutal violence, and the makers have claimed that Marco will be one of the most violent action movies from Mollywood in recent times. Jagadish is said to be essaying a negative role and the Senior actor himself has spoken about the dreadful acts committed by his character.

Aashiq Abu’s Rifle Club piqued the audience’s interest with the sheer number of notable names in its ensemble cast. From Vani Viswananth to the Malayalam acting debut of filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap, and rapper Hanumankind, the stellar cast is also one of the reasons for the buzz surrounding the film. Joining them are other notable actors such as Vijayaraghavan, Surabhi Lakshmi, Dileesh Pothan, and Darshana Rajendran. The film revolves around a group of hunters as they face off against an arms dealer. With an engaging plot, the thumping background score by Rex Vijayan, and terrific action sequences, the film promises to be a riveting watch this holiday season.

The film promises to be a fun watch as Grace Antony and Shyam Mohan of Premalu fame, both known for their comic timing, are joining Suraj Venjaramoodu in the quirky entertainer.

If you are looking for a heart-warming Malayalam movie with a dose of nostalgia, tune into Manorama Max to watch Pallotty 90s Kids right away. The children’s film narrates the tale of two school students, who grew up in the good old 90’s era in Kerala. Davinchi Santhosh and Neeraj Krishna proved that they were the best casting choices with their endearing performances. Davinchi even won the Kerala State Award for Best Child Actor, while Pallotty 90’s Kids bagged two more awards for Best Children’s Film and Best Singer. Balu Varghese and Arjun Ashokan also feature in the film as the grown-up version of the kids.
